New Song

My 4-year-old daughter-

"Mommy, I want to tell you something. You know the song I was singing in the bashedroom was 'Pickle, pickle, pickle, pickle, pickle, pickle, Ooooo I like pickles!" Then she put her hands together, shrugged her shoulders and the expression on her face was bliss. She gets very excited over little things and I hope this never changes. Plus, I might add the melody to this song was pretty good. I might be singing this for a few days.

Twinkle Twinkle

My 20-month-old woke up one morning and started to play in bed. She began to sing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and it melted my heart. She has the melody perfect, but you can't understand her words. It sounds more like she is doing the 1/2 word and 1/2 humming version of it. I'm glad to know she is going to be a singer.

My Daughter's Songs

My daughter likes to make up songs to sing. Here's the one she was singing today....

"If you don't know how to put gas in the car. You're car is going to run out of gas. How can you go on a mission? You need to go to the Temple first."

She said after she was done singing. "Mommy, this song was about gas, a car, going on a mission and getting married in the Temple."

Billie Holiday's God Bless The Child

After listening to the Christmas song, 'God Bless The Child' as sung by Billie Holiday my 3-year-old daughter says, "Mommy, turn this song off!" I asked her why and she replied, "It sounds naughty to me. You need to turn it off."

ABC's

My daughter sings the ABC song in the most unusual way. She will sing it with a high squeaky voice or a low (almost creepy) voice. She come over and say, "I am going to sing my ABC's like a baby horse." Then will sing it in the high voice. Or she will say, "I am going to sing it like an alligator." Then use the low voice. She sings it well despite the octave ranges, but when she gets to the end of the song....well, this is what she says, "Now I know my ABC's next time don't you sing with me."

Shower Songs

From a friend:
One day her son took a shower, and he started singing, "Zippity Doo Dah!" at the top of his lungs.

Welcome Song

When we have a visitor in Primary we ask them to come up and we sing them a welcome song.

Two boys visiting went to the front of Primary and we sang, "Hello, Hello we welcome you this day." After the song was over, he turned to the Chorister and said, "I did not like that song. It was not special."

The Chorister's Daughter

The Chorister was asking if any child had a favorite song they would like to sing during Primary. One hand rose, and it happened to be the Chorister's daughter. She asked her child what song she would like to sing. The girl replied, "Stacey's Mom." It was a popular tune from the radio. The Chorister blushed, and picked the child's favorite Primary song.

Guess The Song

Sometimes in Primary the Chorister will have the pianist play some notes to the song they are about to sing to see if the children know it. She will pick a child with hand up to give the name or sing the first lines of the song. A Sunbeam waved her arm anxiously. She was picked, and said, "My name is Kimberly (not her real name). It's spelled K-I-M-B-E-R-L-Y." She asked her if she knew the song, and Kimberly said, "No."

Favorite Song

The Primary Song Leader or Chorister asked the children to think of their favorite song to sing. She asked a Sunbeam for her and the little girl said, "I want to sing the song about the horses." She took some time trying to figure out what song she was trying to ask her to conduct. After a while, she simply let her know, "There are no songs about the horses." Then she asked someone else.

I still think about it and wonder what song she was wanting to sing. Maybe it was a Pioneer one, but I guess I will never know.

Children take things literally

My Mom, who has a special place in her heart for all children, babysat children since I began to make memories. She babysat this little boy when I was a teenager. He was a cute toddler who sang. He loved it when we would sing together. I must admit I enjoyed singing to him too.

I decided to teach him how to play pretend. I showed him how to do an air guitar while I was singing to him. He picked up on it fast, and was making it his own. He was a natural born rocker. I believe he still likes rock music.

I said, "Alright. Get down!" So, he did. He sat on the floor and looked up at me.

Nursery Chorister

This was my first calling. I would come into the Nursery Room at a specific time, and sing. I guess it should have been common sense to me how children at that age have little to no attention spans.

I would come in and gather them around me. We would start to sing, and when they had enough. They would get up and leave. One by one they would walk away and grab a toy. Until I would be left alone with the adults singing.

It's funny how a little child can walk away from you in mid-conversation (or song) and it is OK. If an adult does this to you, it's rude. Children really do follow the beat of their own drum.
